Weekly Lessons Learned Update

Welcome to the Technology Design Team Weekly Lessons Learned! This will be a recurring feature on Friday afternoons where the Technology Design Team will share top of mind resources and learning. Each week, we will post a few key things we hope you may find useful. We look forward to sharing our learning with you.
Some of the content may be specific to the realities of Austin ISD though, we hope, much will be useful to viewers worldwide.

The New Rich Content Editor will be automatically enabled in ALL BLEND courses by January 2, 2021.

  • Teachers can enable the New Rich Content Editor in individual courses now. If a teacher enables the New RCE in a course, it will affect all users within the course including any enrolled students or collaborating teachers.
  • The New Rich Content Editor is an update to the previous Canvas Rich Content Editor. It provides a condensed, more intuitive toolbar that is grouped by common icons and interactions. Learn more by visiting the “What is the New Rich Content Editor?” written guide.
  • This New Rich Content Editor Tutorial Video provides a ~5-minute overview including some common tasks.
  • We encourage you to enable the New RCE in your Sandbox, Staff Development, and PLC courses to begin exploring before the feature is required in January.
  • A teacher may enable the New Rich Content Editor by following the “How do I manage new features for a course?” written guide. (Course > Settings > Feature Options > RCE Enhancements).

How do I access Adobe Spark? All staff and students can locate Adobe Spark in their AISD Portal Applications.

Did something happen to the custom edits that I made to my blueprint?

While blueprinting does not overwrite content, it will reorder module structure in a BLEND course! Here’s how it manifests: 

  1. Teacher reorders modules in BLEND, adds new content to a module, deletes an item from the module. 
  2. Blueprint syncs. 
  3. Added items move to the top of the module.
  4. Deleted items get re-created in the module.
  5. Modules get put back into original order.
  6. Student’s can’t find previous content because it is now reordered down the module list.

While blueprinting does not overwrite content, it will reorder module structure in a BLEND course!

If modules or module items are rearranged in an associated course, the module order will be updated to match the blueprint course structure in the next sync. If a module item in an associated course is moved to another module, the module item will exist in both modules.
New module items added to a module in an associated course will remain in the module but will display above all blueprint synced module items.

Want help finding an approved YouTube channel?
Here is a partial list of Approved Content in YouTube. Any videos on that channel are automatically approved. Remember that you can reach out to your Technology Design Coach to send them URLs of YouTube videos that you would like approved.

Is something not showing correctly on your screen?

  • Internet browsers store copies of pages in order to speed things up when working with a system that frequently updates content, like BLEND (Canvas), this can create “computer confusion”
  • Force a fresh copy of the web page to download

How do I upgrade my Zoom account? What Zoom learnings have happened this week?

Zoom links from free accounts are expiring so teachers need to switch over to using the district licensed accounts (refresher on how to do this)

  • If you need help upgrading your Zoom account to the paid license, look through the Google Slide Deck at http://bit.ly/aisdzoom.
  • Reminder: Chromebooks only have annotation ability when the host of the Zoom meeting shares a whiteboard.
  • Students on a Chromebook do NOT see messages sent to the waiting room.
  • Paid licenses offer Zoom tech support. New tickets can be created at this link.

How can I get Zoom help?

  • Our contract with Zoom includes technical support. Teachers can submit a ticket when they have a Zoom technical issue: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/requests/new
  • *NOTE: Zoom support staff will only accept your request if you have completed the steps to join AISD’s licensed Zoom account. (Steps at bit.ly/aisdzoom.)

Will Technology Design Team Virtual Office Hours still happen?
Virtual Office Hours with the Technology Design Team for next week will happen on Tuesday-Thursday from 9:00-11:00 AM and 3:00-5:00 PM and on Friday from 3:00-5:00 PM. Please check the Global Announcement in BLEND for the Zoom link.
