Welcome to the Technology Design Team Weekly Lessons Learned! This is a recurring feature on Friday afternoons where the Technology Design Team will share top of mind resources and learning. Each week, we will post a few key things we hope you may find useful. We look forward to sharing our learning with you.

Some of the content may be specific to the realities of Austin ISD though, we hope, much will be useful to viewers worldwide. The Weekly Lessons Learned Archive contains a list of topics from and links to previous updates.

Changes coming to YouTube access for elementary students.
This was first shared in the 9-29-22 Principals’ Weekly:
To help increase security and minimize student distraction for our youngest learners, we will be making a change to the access to YouTube.com for our PreK-5th grade students on Friday, October 14, 2022.

Elementary students using their Austin ISD Google accounts on Chromebooks will only be able to access YouTube content when videos are provided to them through embedding. This limits their ability to go to youtube.com to access videos or search video content. Please see the below options for how teachers can embed YouTube content to share with students for instructional purposes.

Students using Austin ISD-provided iPads will not have any access to YouTube content on their device. This will also apply to teacher-issued iPads. Teachers may continue to show content via their EduDisplay using their laptops.

We are collaborating with the Academics teams to ensure content provided within the curriculum will be updated moving forward. Access for students in 6th grade and above will not be affected.

With the grading period coming to an end, we thought we would share some BLEND/Canvas gradebook tips.

How do I filter by grading period in my BLEND gradebook?

  • Your assignment settings and due dates impact which grading period assignments go into in your BLEND gradebook.
  • This is a screencast on how to filter specifically by grading period.
  • The grading periods in BLEND are set to match the official Austin ISD calendar. As we move from one grading period to the next, your BLEND gradebook filters will automatically adjust to the current grading period.

What other filters are available in the BLEND gradebook?

How can I get the grades for students who have changed their schedule out of my BLEND course?

What grading options are available in BLEND?

Why is it important to set due dates?

Can I update a new quiz then have it regrade and update the BLEND gradebook?

  • When regrade works:
    • Currently, quiz regrade is available for Multiple Choice, True/False, and Multiple Answers question types.
    • Quiz regrade only applies to students who have already taken the quiz.
  • When regrade does not work:
    • Adding or removing a question does not trigger the quiz regrade feature.
    • Changing the point value for a quiz question does not trigger a quiz regrade.
    • The student’s submitted quiz will show the updated point value, but the current grade won’t change in the Gradebook.
  • What to do when regrade will not work:
    • Moderate the quiz and let the student(s) retake the quiz.
    • Manually update the grades in the gradebook to match the regraded quiz score.
  • Canvas guide: What options can I use to regrade a quiz in a course?
